Violence begets violence. So says a recent report by the U.S. intelligence community. The Iraq war has created more terrorism and has made Americans a more likely target for future attacks.
This finding was predicted by a group much more mundane than any spy agency. The global peace community begged Americans to say "No" to the proposed Iraq war partly because it meant increasing the terrorist threat.
Other reasons had to do with common morality. Members of the peace community also have recommendations for decreasing terrorism. If the U.S. takes the money it is currently spending on the military, and instead put it toward ending poverty in other countries, it will remove the most powerful motivator of terrorism.
One of the world's best-known economists, Jeffrey D. Sachs, forecasts that we can end poverty in our time. This provides an easy route, not only for making America safer, but also for replacing sadness with joy throughout the world.
