Thursday night's volleyball match between Santa Fe and host P.K. Yonge featured two teams that reached the regional finals but lost several key players from 2005's playoff run.
If Santa Fe's performance is any indication, it could be poised for another deep playoff run, as the Raiders dispatched P.K. Yonge in four games (16-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18).
"We started off sluggish and then we picked it up," Raider coach Michele Faulk said. "They ended up getting it together and they really started gelling out there."
The first game was competitive, with the Blue Wave (5-1) leading most of the way. P.K. Yonge put the game away with seven consecutive service points, including two aces, by senior libero Brandy Waters.
From that point on, Santa Fe (4-2) capitalized on numerous unenforced errors by the Blue Wave. The Raiders stymied the home team with a well-balanced attack, led by junior Leah Leventhal (9 kills, 7 digs) and sophomore Ashley Rosenboom (21 service points, 15 digs, five aces).
"At the end of game one, we were executing exceptionally well," Blue Wave coach Perry McDonald said. "I think Santa Fe did an excellent job challenging us and taking us out of our comfort level in the next three games."
For P.K. Yonge, the non-district game with Santa Fe was the first real test of the season.
"They competed fairly well, but I think they have to get used to seeing this level of competition," McDonald said.
For Faulk's team, this was the third straight match against teams ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes, but this match was the team's first win of the three. Faulk expects to see the benefits of a difficult schedule to become evident as the season wears on.
"I've always said playing tough teams makes you tougher," Faulk said.
