If you plan on heading up to Gainesville from Ocala or Micanopy via Interstate 75 today, don't expect to be able to get off at the Williston Road exit.
The Florida Department of Transportation will temporarily close the northbound I-75 off-ramp at Williston Road starting at 9 a.m. today, and the right hand and center lanes of I-75 will also be closed in that vicinity starting at 9 a.m.
"We're doing an investigation into what is causing a depression on the approach slab, which is the pavement leading up to the overpass (over Williston Road)," said Gina Busscher with DOT.
Busscher said the depression is in the soil embankment that was created for the overpass, so residents need not worry that it is a developing sinkhole.
Motorists will be detoured to the Archer Road exit two miles north. Busscher said motorists can either find their way back using Archer Road, or they can get back on the interstate going south and get off at the southbound Williston Road exit.
Busscher said crews will be working with the northbound center lane's tests first, so that hopefully they will be able to reopen that lane by mid-day. The right lane is expected to be closed most of the day.
If, for some reason, the day's work is not completed by 4 p.m., crews will pack up nonetheless, and work will likely resume on Thursday.
This road work was rescheduled from Jan. 23 due to rain. The radar and other equipment used for the testing does not work in the rain, therefore, if it rains today, the work will have to be postponed again, Busscher said.
