A two-car crash in eastern Alachua County left one dead and another injured Monday afternoon.
Traffic along southbound U.S. 301 was backed up more than a mile as officers investigated the fatal accident, which occurred at 1:30 p.m. about a mile south of State Road 20.
Mary Beck Glass, 81, of Hawthorne, who had been driving a Cadillac, died in the crash, said Florida Highway Patrol Cpl. Greg Potter.
The driver of the second vehicle, 18-year-old Cory Keith Krebbs of Lochloosa, was injured. Krebbs was driving a 1995 Ford Mustang GT. An update on Krebbs' condition was not immediately available, troopers said.
Potter said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash.
The two cars apparently were heading south, troopers said.
The woman appeared to have slowed down or stopped the Cadillac in the road's right lane or on the western shoulder when the Mustang struck it from behind.
The Cadillac was pushed about 120 feet, leaving gouges in the dirt before it stopped near railroad tracks paralleling the road.
Officers blocked southbound lanes and rerouted traffic for about one hour before reopening the road.
The crash remained under investigation Monday evening.
