City needs citizens' ideas

The City Commission approved $20,000 for a marketing partnership aimed at creating a new "brand" name to attract tourists and new businesses. Eventually a total of $73,000 will be committed for the new marketing strategy.
The idea of Gainesville being recognized for more than the Gators and the University of Florida is to be applauded. Should we be the "Little Apple of Florida," the "Gainesville, the Jewel of Central Florida," "Gainesville - the Hurricane Shelter," etc.?
I am sure that many residents would have some good ideas because they live and shop here and know what is really appreciated. Maybe we should call it the "City without citizens' ideas and input" or the "City supporting outside business with local tax money." I am just amazed that with all the local intellect in this city, the commission would not even have considered a local contest or poll published in The Gainesville Sun or asked the brilliant business and marketing graduate students at the University of Florida for their submissions. I am sure they would consider doing this as part of their graduate studies and resumes.
This is not some complicated engineering project. All it takes is a catchy phrase or logo. We could possibly save a lot of taxpayer money, which could then be spent on beautification projects.
