P.K. Yonge's playoff run came to an abrupt halt Thursday night, when Jacksonville Episcopal handily defeated the host Blue Wave, 9-1, in a Region 1-3A quarterfinal match.
"I think we did well," Eagles coach Daniel Villarreal said. "We had a tough district final on Friday night, but I think we showed real well."
The Blue Wave (8-8-1) had a flurry of offense five minutes into the game, getting off three shots, but couldn't convert the opportunities.
"It was just unlucky that they weren't able to capitalize on the opportunities that we had," P.K. Yonge coach Pauline Hazan said. "It could happen to any team."
After that, the flood gates opened for Episcopal (12-9-4). Junior Kerry Kartsonis scored the first goal after intercepting a goal kick and led the Eagles with five goals.
Sophomore Mariel Mena scored the Blue Wave's goal late in the first half, on a sky-high kick from about 30 yards out.
Region 1-6A Quarterfinal Port Orange Spruce Creek 3, Buchholz 1 The game marked the end for three Bobcat seniors: Nikki Collins, Lauren Dwyer and Chelsea Chidgey, who will all play collegiate soccer next season. Buchholz finishes the season at 13-6-4, while Spruce Creek improves to 17-3-3.
Region 1-5A Quarterfinal Fleming Island 2, Eastside 1 Eastside's only goal came in the second half on a free kick by sophomore goalie Kelly Masteller. She also recorded 11 saves, but it wasn't enough. The Rams finished the season at 16-11-1, while Fleming Island improved to 17-4-2.
Region 1-4A Quarterfinal Jacksonville Stanton 3, Suwannee 0 As was evidenced in a 2-0 loss to Orange Park Ridgeview in the District 3-4A championship game, the Bulldogs (14-8-1) struggled to execute their offense and couldn't keep their opponents out of the net.
Region 1-3A Quarterfinal Jacksonville Bolles 11, Newberry 0 Bolles (18-4-2) overmatched the Panthers (10-9-3) from the start and advanced to face Taylor County in the next round.
Region 2-3A Quarterfinal Taylor County 6, South Walton 0 The Bulldogs (14-7) got a hat trick from Katie Cooper in the first half. She also assisted on the first goal, scored by Krystal Towles, who finished with two goals.
Ocala Trinity Catholic 8, Interlachen 0 The Rams dropped to 5-9-4.
