Marla Jean Bird

Marla Jean Bird of Old Town died Sunday at North Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 63.

Mrs. Bird moved to Old Town five years ago from Hastings, Mich.

She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Trenton.

She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Ray Bird.

Survivors include a son, Douglas L. Bird of Freeport, Mich.; a daughter, Dawn Lynn Akins of Alto, Mich.; sisters Donna Mallison and Marjorie Bird, both of Old Town, and Winifred Like of Plain Well, Mich.; brothers Roscoe Cochran of Richland, Mich., and Roy Cochran of Delton, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

Noah Harris

Noah Harris of Gainesville died Jan. 18 at Shands at AGH after a brief illness. He was 68.

Mr. Harris was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.

He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, and also sang in the Chancel Choir.

Survivors include sisters Alyne Harris and Maggie Bryant, both of Gainesville, and Josie Harris Smith of Milwaukee; a half-sister, Mable Warren of Gainesville; and a half-brother, Otis Harris Jr. of Gainesville.

Alfred Huff

Alfred "Red" Huff of Waldo died Monday at Shands at AGH. He was 93.

Mr. Huff was born in New Smyrna Beach and moved to Waldo 30 years ago.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waldo.

Survivors include sons Alfred D. Huff of Gainesville, Donald R. Huff of Philadelphia and Michael W. Huff of Waldo; a daughter, Darlene E. Novack of Gainesville; a sister, Nettie Moody of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Jessie Mae Jenkins

Jessie Mae Jenkins of Hawthorne died Monday at her daughter's home in Gainesville. She was 82.

Mrs. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Hawthorne.

She was a retired environmental service technician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville.

She was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Hawthorne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Jenkins Sr., and daughters Doris Thompkins and Mamie O'Neal.

Survivors include sons Cleon Jenkins of Gainesville, Willie Jenkins Jr. and Thomas Gary Jenkins, both of Hawthorne; daughters Minnie Johnson and Barbara Davis, both of Gainesville; brothers Lonnie Harris Jr. of Gainesville, Lenton Harris of Orlando, James Harris of Tampa and John Harris of Hawthorne; sisters Lillie Mae Gordon of Orlando, Daisy Morris of Sparr, Ovella Martin, Alice Small and Irish Jenkins, all of Hawthorne; 21 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Lorine Jean Judkins

Lorine Jean Judkins of Old Town died Tuesday at the Tri-County Haven Hospice Care Center in Chiefland. She was 65.

Mrs. Judkins was a lifelong resident of Dixie County.

She was a Protestant.

Survivors include sons James Jerry Farina and Edward Mark Jackson, both of Deltona, and Edwin Lewis Jackson Jr. of Cedar Key; sisters Evelyn McCleary of Old Town and Dorothy Brooke of Sanford; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cherrystine R. Markham

Cherrystine R. Markham of Miami died Saturday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was 52.

Mrs. Markham was born in Gainesville.

She was a certified nursing assistant.

She graduated from Hawthorne High School and attended Santa Fe Community College.

She was a member of Abiding Faith Christian Church in Gainesville.

Survivors include daughters Michi Williams of Miami and Katina Markham of Orlando; brothers Fred Markham, Albert Williams, Larry Markham and Jeff Williams, all of Gainesville, Sylvester Williams of Jacksonville and Eugene Markham of Hawthorne; sisters Jessie McNeil of Gainesville and Thelma Markham of Hawthorne; and one grandchild.

Warner G. Learnahan

Warner G. Learnahan of Alachua died Sunday of cardiac arrest. He was 85.

Mr. Learnahan was born in Chicago and moved to Alachua five years ago from Wellington.

He was a retired operating engineer.

He served in the 10th Armored Division of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Gainesville and a member and past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9229 in Alachua.

He was a Catholic.

Survivors include sons Michael P. Learnahan of Chicago, Douglas G. Learnahan of Park Ridge, Ill., Scott Learnahan of Rio Vista, Calif., and Larry L. Learnahan of Bolingbrook, Ill.; and a stepson, Randall Jacobson of Chicago.

Johnny Lee McHenry

Johnny Lee McHenry of Fort White died Jan. 19 at Shands at the University of Florida. He was 47.

Mr. McHenry was born in Fort White.

He was a cook.

Survivors include sisters Shirley Griffin of Fort White, Rosie Marie White and Carolyn McHenry, both of Gainesville, Altamease Hankerson of Charlotte, N.C., Varnessa Milton and Sharon Milton, both of Florida City, and Vivian Rollins of North Hill, Calif.; and brothers Sammy L. White, Isaac McHenry and Santonio Phillips, all of Fort White, James White, Marvin Hopper and Tyrone Carter, all of Lake City, Fredrick McHenry of Mayo, William R. Milton, Prescott Milton and Timothy Milton, all of Florida City, and Aubrey Milton of El Paso, Texas.

Randolph D. Scopino

Randolph D. Scopino of Reddick died Sunday at his home. He was 53.

Mr. Scopino was born in Hialeah and moved to Reddick more than 20 years ago.

He enjoyed coaching youth football, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brandon Beckett.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Scopino of Reddick; a son, Dominick Scopino of Brunswick, Ga.; his father, Leo Scopino Sr. of Woolwich, Maine; a brother Leo Scopino Jr. of Leesburg; and two grandchildren, whom he raised, Andy Beckett and Joni Beckett, both of Reddick.

Barney Singleton

Barney Singleton of Gainesville died Jan. 18 at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was 48.

Mr. Singleton was a lifelong resident of Gainesville.

He was a cement finisher.

He graduated from Buchholz High School and attended Florida A&M University.

He attended Atlas A.M.E. Church.

Survivors include brothers Maxie Singleton, Louis Singleton Jr., Clarence Singleton and Alfred Singleton, all of Gainesville; and sisters Elizabeth Moore, Helen Estelle Marshall and Carrie Singleton, all of Gainesville.

Leevant Smith

Leevant "Cigar" Smith of Gainesville died Saturday at his home after an extended illness. He was 62.

Mr. Smith was born in the Gordon settlement near Gainesville and moved back to the Gainesville area in 1980 from Delray Beach.

He was a retired truck driver.

He graduated from Lincoln High School.

He was a member of Emanuel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Lucille Williams Smith of Gainesville; daughters Joyce Henry Cherry of Waxhaw, N.C., and Karen D. Shuler of Boynton Beach; a son, Bernard Jerkins of Lantana; brothers Horace C. Smith of Fort Lauderdale and Harvey Smith of Gainesville; a sister, Mary J. Smith of Gainesville; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mayflower Thornton

Mayflower Thornton of Micanopy died Tuesday at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. She was 78.

Mrs. Thornton was born in Chiefland. She moved to Micanopy more than seven years ago from Starke.

She was a cottage parent with the state of Florida for more than 45 years.

She loved embroidering.

She was preceded in death by husbands James M. Lee and Wilbert Thornton.

Survivors include sons W.M. "Chubby" Lee and James F. Lee, both of Jacksonville; a stepson, Arthur Thornton of Raiford; daughters Barbara Louise Pendray of Williston and Betty Jewel Martin of Micanopy; stepdaughters Geneva Williams of Lake City and Evelyn Goosby of Starke; sisters Timmie Daughtry of Lake City, Lucille Arrington of Trenton and Jeannette Barber of Williston; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
