Wasteful days off

School Board Chairman Wes Eubank is quoted as saying that Alachua county schools started after Aug. 15. Actually, the first day of school was Aug. 15, and some parent/teacher events were held on Aug. 11-12.
Suggestions for making better use of the calendar: (1) Eliminate early releases on Wednesdays, which results in the loss of at least one week's FCAT preparation time; (2) eliminate the three teacher workdays; (3) eliminate the off day on Homecoming, and eliminate frivolous changes such as the cancellation of school on Jan. 2 so everyone could watch the Gator bowl game.
Changing these three things would allow school to start later in August without affecting the 180 mandatory school days, which is one thing that hasn't changed over the years.
