PANAMA CITY - A Texas man found unconscious in a Panama City motel room a week ago allegedly told mental health workers he planned to kill President Bush because of the situation in Iraq.
In an initial federal court appearance Monday, Kelly W. James ,54, told Judge Larry Bodiford that he would serve as his own attorney on the threat charge, which could get him five years in prison.
According to court records, James was found unconscious in a motel room Jan. 3 and was taken to Bay Medical Center for treatment. While at the hospital, he threatened to kill himself and was transferred to a mental health center.
A Secret Service agent said in a report that James told the mental health center staff that he had a gun and planned to go to Washington and kill the president when he was released.
The report said James was upset about the situation in Iraq and the length of time troops had been there.
His hometown in Texas wasn't immediately available.
