Sun writer should get facts straight

In "Namesake was fond of building" (Dec. 26) Kevin Brockway wrote that I "organized sit-ins at his (President Stephen C. O'Connell's) office during Vietnam protests." That is not true. In fact, no one organized a sit-in at his office as part of the anti-Vietnam war demonstrations here in 1970 and 1972.

In the same article Brockway stated that, as a collegiate boxer, Steve O'Connell scored "the longest bout won by a knockout in school history in 1938." I'm sure that he meant to say the shortest bout. In that year Steve KOed the Tennessee middleweight contender in 12 seconds of the first round - not just a school but a still standing SEC record. As he often reminded me, "That time included the 10 seconds for the referee to count him out."
