  • Help a child whose life has been turned upside down as a result of Hurricane Katrina at the "Hurricane Relief Holiday Extravaganza."
    The benefit will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Middle School, 1001 SE 12th St. in Gainesville. The event is free, but admission at the door is a new, unwrapped toy, a donation of new clothes, shoes and books for children, or a monetary gift.
    What you will get is an evening of entertainment from comedians, gospel recording artists, local choirs, actors and dancers.
    According to the organizers, the extravaganza is being held "to show genuine Christian love in the true spirit of the Christmas season in giving joy to the children."
    The event will be hosted by Keith "Special K" Lewers, who portrayed Cousin Pete in the movie "Poetic Justice," with Janet Jackson and the late Tupac Shakur. He currently is a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Gainesville.
    Providing entertainment will be Barbara Porter of Gainesville, who will perform a praise dance. The male chorus and the youth choir of Springhill church also will perform.
    Get your funny bone tickled with comedians Tim, the Dairy Farmer, who lives near Tallahassee, and Angel Gaines, known as America's funniest teacher. A native of Savannah, Ga., she lives in Los Angeles. Her comedy centers around real-life experiences, such as being a teacher.
    Gospel recording artists showcasing their talents include Lady Ashley Johnson with Larry McCullough and the Chosen Generation Mass Choir of Greenville, S.C., and the Miracle Sisters of Tampa in conjunction with gospel recording artist Luther Barnes.
    The event is being sponsored by Lewers' New Kingdom Entertainment Ministries and the Springhill church Fine Arts & Outreach Ministries in association with Victory Temple Miracle Center.
