University of Florida sophomore All-American Savannah Evans (Destin, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
This is her first SEC Gymnast of the Week honor of her career and she is the first Gator to claim the award this season.
In the six-year history of the award, a Gator has picked up the honor eight times.
Former Gator All-Americans Chrissy Van Fleet (two times in 2000), Hilary Thompson (once in 2001), Orley Szmuch (one time in 2002, '03 and '04) and Erinn Dooley (twice in 2004) also earned the award.
Evans was awarded the SEC Gymnast of the Week after providing the Gators with a meet-winning performance on floor exercise as No. 5 Florida defeated No. 4 Alabama 196.55-196.35 on Jan. 28.
The Gators needed a 9.775 or better from Evans to win the meet and Evans matched her collegiate-best floor score of 9.95 to share the evening's event title with defending NCAA floor champion Ashley Miles.
Evans also matched her season-best vault mark of 9.825 Friday versus the Tide.
Evans and the rest of the No. 5 Gator gymnastics team travel to Athens, Ga., to meet defending Southeastern Conference champion and current No. 7 Georgia on Friday, Feb. 4.
Meet time is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Stegeman Coliseum. Friday's meet will air tape-delayed on ESPN2 Feb. 8 at 2:30 p.m.
