A High Springs Garden Club member will be honored and a city building gets badly needed landscaping in a project that brought many groups together with one goal in mind.
The garden club, along with Junior Girl Scout Troop 994, master gardeners, the Extension office and other volunteers, spent two Saturday mornings adding a little color and personality to the grounds of City Hall.
And their hard work will be recognized at 5:30 p.m. Thursday during a dedication ceremony in front of the building.
The landscaping project also will honor Sunshine Berry, a garden club member who passed away in 2003. In her memory, her daughter, Sylvia Marteny Newcomb, provided a mosaic stepping stone created by Barbara Miller that will be placed at the site.
And on workdays, morning snacks and a hot lunch were provided by members of the High Springs New Century Women's Club.
The scouts will earn a community service patch, but more importantly, they will be remembered for doing something helpful for their community.
This was not just a landscaping project. The UF/IFAS Florida Yards and Neighborhoods provided printed materials about environmentally friendly landscaping and demonstration garden signs explaining the nine principles of environmentally friendly gardening.
Included in the information was where to put the right plant in the right place, conserving water, minimizing fertilizer applications and using pesticides wisely.
Wendy Wilber, horticulture agent of the UF/IFAS Alachua County Extension Office and the office's master gardeners helped with plant selection and proper planting and also provided the irrigation system.
Wilber also will hold landscaping workshops this spring at the High Springs library.
