The Florida Gators secured a potential replacement for outgoing place-kicker Matt Leach, gaining an oral commitment from standout Wellington kicker Jonathan Phillips.
Phillips was offered a scholarship by new UF coach Urban Meyer over the weekend and he accepted.
Over his junior and senior seasons at Wellington, Phillips was good on 18 of his 21 field goal attempts from inside 45 yards and 95 percent of his kickoffs went for touchbacks. He had a career-long field goal of 47 yards.
"(Florida's) getting a good one," Wellington coach Erik Robinson told the Palm Beach Post. "He works really hard at his trade."
Phillips is one of five prospects who committed to the Gators over the weekend, joining wide receiver David Nelson (Wichita Falls, Texas), linebacker Ryan Stamper (Jacksonville First Coast), defensive back Dorian Munroe (Miami Coral Reef) and defensive back Eric Sledge (Apopka).
