The Florida Legislature recently required that our country's flag be displayed in all classrooms K-20 and indicated the needed funds ($15,000 in Alachua County) to accomplish this be raised through donations and fund-raisers.
Sun editorials have recently expressed the belief that the Legislature should provide the funds.
Since they did not provide the funds, the Alachua County Veterans Memorial Committee took action to sponsor a fund-raising campaign to raise the money needed for all Alachua County classrooms.
John H. Moore, a Vietnam veteran and UF professor, wrote (Jan. 15) in a Speaking Out that he does not want our flag in his classroom. Isn't it wonderful. We can express our different opinions and take different actions.
More than 250 patriotic individuals agree with memorial committee that our country's flag should be displayed and have made donations to purchase the new flags.
The committee says thank you to those who have donated.
Jim McCawley, chair, Alachua County Veterans Memorial Committee
