Lake City Police are investigating the first murder in the city since 2001, officers reported Friday.
Two women found the body of a 39-year-old man between two vacant homes in northeast Lake City Thursday morning, Capt. Gary Laxton said.
Police initially were unable to identify the man and had sent out fingerprint samples for comparison to both the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI.
But Laxton said officers had learned his identity Friday. However, they were not releasing the man's name until his family has been notified. The man is believed to be from North Carolina.
The body was discovered at 803 Dundee Way, Laxton said. He had been shot once in the side of the head and was wearing heavy clothes, as if dressed for the cold weather.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood Thursday, looking for information about the man and the shooting. Police continued to search for the gun as well as a motive for the man's death Friday, Laxton said.
The crime scene is located a few blocks from the location of the city's last murder on Dec. 9, 2001, Laxton said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Lake City Police Department at (386)752-4343.
