Fuel efficient and reliable

Regarding The Sun article on energy efficient cars (Jan. 18): In 1984, my late husband purchased a Ford Escort station wagon with a diesel engine.
His first long-distance trip after purchasing this vehicle was to help our daughter's family move from Big Pine Key in the lower Florida Keys to the north side of Jacksonville.
That vehicle went the whole distance of no less than 500 miles on one tank of fuel and averaged more than 70 miles per gallon. The entire time he owned the vehicle (over 10 years) he never had any major mechanical problems or repairs.
I have always wondered why that vehicle never was mass produced or publicized. Could it have been because it was too fuel efficient and reliable?
