The University of Florida men's and women's tennis teams are set to begin their 2005 seasons this week.
The men will head to New Orleans to compete in the SEC Indoor Championship which will run Jan. 13-17.
The women begin their season traveling to Las Vegas Jan. 14-16 for the Freeman Memorial, an individual event featuring some of the nation's top athletes.
UF's Janne Holmia placed second for the men's team in the 2003 SEC Indoor Championship, and in 2004, senior Hamid Mirzadeh fell in the semi-finals. Men's Head Coach Andy Jackson led the team to an SEC title in 2003.
Representing the women at the Freeman Memorial will be sophomore Nina Suvak and freshmen Whitney Benik, Lolita Frangulyan and Alex Liles. The women's team, led by Head Coach Roland Thornqvist, won the SEC regular season and tournament titles last year and capped off the season ranked No. 3.
The women's team was ranked No. 2 nationally in the first poll of the 2004-2005 season, released Jan. 11 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The team also received nine individual rankings, tying the program record.
The men's tennis team was ranked No. 3 in the same poll. The men's individual rankings were not available at press time.
The men's team will begin their 2005 dual season on Jan. 23 against UCS at home, and have not lost the last 16 of their opening day matches.
The women's team plays host to Baylor for their dual match opener on Jan. 22.
