Taking responsibility today

Today I will accept responsibility for myself.

If I get a speeding ticket, I will not curse the officer or challenge the speed zone; I will accept that I got caught speeding.

If I get fired from my job, I will accept that the qualities of my services are no longer needed and that if I choose to work for someone else, I have to accept their decisions.

If I find that I've gained some weight, I will not sue the restaurant I ate at yesterday or blame the TV for making me not exercise.

If I don't like what's on TV, I won't blame the networks for ignoring my specific desires for entertainment, I will make my wishes known to them instead. If I don't like a movie, I will not go see it. I will not protest at the cinema.

If I don't like a cartoon, I will not accuse the writer of bias or ignorance, I will accept that he has an opinion (even if I think it's wrong).

If I don't like your opinion, I will ignore it. If I don't like the service I get, I will take my business elsewhere. If I don't like my lot in life, I will accept responsibility for where I am and make changes.

I will forever banish the following phrases from my life: My ancestors came from the wrong country; my mother didn't hug me enough or she hugged me too much; I ate too many Twinkies; I am the wrong ethnic group; I am the wrong political group; I am right and you are wrong!

Today I have decided to make my own decisions and take responsibility for myself.

Larry Freedman,
