Defensive end Mike Mangold of Merritt Island, FL decommitted from Virginia Tech today and gave his verbal commitment to the University of Florida. Despite strong family ties to VT Mangold confirmed that his commitment to Florida is solid. Mangold said that he'd have to be blown away by his visit to Gainesville this past weekend if he was going to change his commitment. He went home from the visit with high marks and then the wait was on. The wait, as it turned out was not long. Roughly 48 hours after returning home on Sunday he gave his pledge to the Gator coaches and informed VT head coach Frank Beamer that he was no longer coming to Virginia Tech.

Mangold is an outstanding talent with a motor that never stops. He never lets up on a play and will relentlessly chase the ball down. He plays sideline to sideline and his tenacious style has drawn him several comparisons from college coaches to Georgia star defensive end David Pollack. If Mike Mangold lives up to that billing the Gators will remember this day as a day they got a truly special player.

Mangold could be the start of a very good week for Gator recruiting. FB David Holbert is expected to commit tomorrow on a Rivals chat at roughly 1:40 PM and will choose between Florida and Tennessee, while LB Josh Johnson is expected to commit on tomorrow night's edition of Countdown to Signing Day. Johnson will pick between Florida, Tennessee, Miami and Georgia. LB Lawrence Timmons will announce his intentions on Thursday, picking between Florida State and Tennessee with Florida maintaining an outside shot. On Friday DT Michael Brown, a former UGA commit, will announce between Florida and Georgia and LB Robert Ayers will decide between Florida and Tennessee. LB James Bryant will pick this week between Pitt, Miami and Florida with Pitt being the favorite. QB Cornelius Ingram could also pick out of Florida, Florida State and South Florida, but Ingram may wait until Signing Day. Other commits may also come between this week and weekend, but those are the names to be watching for that have discussed making their intentions known this week.
