Energy bill would be an environmental disaster

In November, President Bush, Vice President Cheney and their allies fell two votes short of ramming a disastrous energy bill through the Senate. Now that Congress is back in session, they vow to make passage of the bill their top priority.
This bill is a major rip-off of the American taxpayer with corporate tax breaks and loan guarantees for the oil, coal and nuclear industries ranging from $23 billion to more than $100 billion. It would exempt polluters from the most important provisions of our clean air and water laws. And it would make oil and gas development the dominant use of our federal public lands.
Passage of this bill will lead to blighted wilderness, poisonous air pollution, devastating climate change and endless wars over fossil fuels.
This bill was cooked up during hundreds of secret meetings between our oilman Cheney, his congressional allies and energy company executives - and is their payoff for their campaign contributions.
Please call your senators and tell them to oppose this disastrous legislation. Urge them to support renewable energy, conservation and reduction of dependence on fossil fuels. For more information see www.nrdc.org/.
