A section of NW 39th Avenue was shut down Tuesday afternoon following a leak from a natural gas line.

A contractor working for Gainesville Regional Utilities and drilling on the north side of 39th Avenue hit the six-inch line, causing the leak at about noon, said Tiffany Cooper of Gainesville Fire Rescue.

Westbound traffic along the road near NW 34th Street had been shut down as crews worked to isolate and repair the leak. A nearby church and day care facility also were evacuated, Cooper said.

The road was expected to reopen by around 2:30 p.m.
