After a full day of action at the Storm of the Century wrestling tournament hosted by Gainesville High School on Saturday, Miami Southridge (No. 3 in Class 3A) built on an early lead and never looked back on its way to the title.
The event featured two groups of five teams battling through a grueling round-robin format designed to give the athletes an opportunity to wrestle at least four matches, and determine the seeding for the individual finals. In the finals, only the top six seeds scored points for their teams.
Southridge's group included Columbia, Fort Myers, Tallahassee Lincoln and Wakulla, while the second group included Clay, Gainesville (No. 12 in 2A), Orange Park, Tampa Sickles and Suwannee.
Gainesville's Nick Davis, last year's Class 2A state champion at 171 pounds, took the individual title at 189 pounds, as the Hurricanes seesawed with Suwannee throughout the day for the runner-up spot.
