Violin, music teachers association students showcase skills

Area student musicians from two separate organizations recently said goodbye to the old year with events that showcased their talent and spread the joy of music in the community.

The students of violin teacher Kim Chalmers held their annual violin recital recently at The Village.

The students, whose ages range from 5 to 17, perform in recitals twice a year, including at the Thomas Center, and hold minor performances elsewhere in the community.

Performing music of the season were: John Betz, Kim Chalmers, Sarina Chalmers, Caitlin Cowie, Chanterelle Davis, Cristina De La Puerta, Manuel De La Puerta, Erin Elzo, Joshua Hirschfeld-Kroen and Laura Jervis.

Also, Alexis Mansolo, Molly Muldoon, Eleanor Mutschlecner, Emilio Quintana, Grace Quintana, Muriel Quintana, Emily Rich, Clare Rumsey, Julia Ruskin, Kara Siebein, Evan Teal, Eli Tragash and Tess Tumarkin.

Meanwhile, 25 students whose instructors are members of the Gainesville Music Teachers Association (GMTA) were recently featured in a recital at the Thomas Center.

String performers were Miles Okus, Anna Sampson and Oona Takano (violin trio); Sophia Lee and Jimmy Wong (violin solos); and Kalindi Bellach (viola solo).

Piano solos were performed by Esther Ko, Mary Liu, Sophia Liu, Rebecca Di, Paige Baker, Kathleen Joo, Rebecca Yang, Blake Jones, Kevin Jones, Stella Lee, Lee Dunn-Gader, Josh Diblin, Tessa Yelton, Vanessa Dayton, Alan Clark and Eunice Jin.

Meng Peng and Lucy Zhong played a piano duo and Anisha Patel performed a vocal solo.

GMTA teachers participating were Ginger Brown, Suzanne Carpenter, Mika Fujita, Hee Jung Kang, Helen Kirklin, Wanda Louie, Janna Lower, Rebecca Micha, Mary Roberts, Roberta Rothman, Boaz Sharon, Elizabeth Sugalski, Betsy Wade, Linda Weltner and Barbara Young.

Future GMTA student recitals include the Bernice Maskin Memorial Chamber Music Recital on May 1 and the Alma Fennell Winter/Spring Showcase Recital on June 3.

Both recitals will be held at the Thomas Center; all GMTA student recitals are co-sponsored by the City of Gainesville Department of Cultural Affairs.
