Lionel Tate was able to obtain a deal from Broward County prosecutors and will spend three years in prison rather than life. Life was far too harsh a sentence for a person his age. Three years may be considered by some to be too lenient.
Hopefully, this will open the door for a review of other teens sentenced to life without a chance of parole: John Silva of Putnam County, 15 years old at sentencing; Joshua Stevens of Jacksonville, 14 years old at sentencing; and far too many others.
Lionel Tate had a large constituency - the NAACP and many other groups fought for his release. These other kids have had no voice. They also deserve justice and a chance for life.
