Your editorial "Root Causes," (Jan. 3) sang the siren's song of the Population Coalition. "Overpopulation" is their old battle cry used to destroy life - their expedient and "practical" solution.
Serendipitously, on January 6, juxtaposed on page 2D of your paper, two articles gave me and others (I pray) hope.
Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, was pictured reprehensibly risking infanticide with his one-month old son. He provoked worldwide disgust.
Above this picture was Dear Abby's column in which she and her correspondents enlightened those who fret over money and natural resources, what value and potential resides in human resources. Single moms' children described how they asserted and improved themselves by grasping opportunity. They prevailed over the defeatist philosophy of the "culture of death."
Saddam Hussein's regime may be the reason for the "overpopulation" he would abuse for his exploits. America, on the other hand, can and will improve their lot with education and noble aspirations, not with sterilization and abortion.
