It never fails. When January rolls around, litter rolls to the forefront. Look around you. Everywhere you look there is litter, litter, litter.
Why is this? There are several reasons:
1. The holidays take their toll.
2. Governmental workers, students and highway, road and street adopters take a vacation.
3. Green grass takes a hike, leaving only brown grass, which makes the litter more prominent.
What a shame! This is the time of year when parents bring their offspring to the state's largest college. This is the time of year when visitors escaping the cold North come to Florida and stay in Gainesville/Alachua County or pass through it. We should be at our best.
What can we do? Clean up! Pick up! Beautify!
Where? Mostly roadsides but also around your home and your business.
Call Keep Alachua County Beautiful at 371-9444 if you as an individual or group would like a list of areas that badly need attention right now. If you see such an area with a sign designating who has adopted that roadside or spot, call them and ask them to make January one of the months they should conduct one of their cleanups.
Or clean it up yourself. It's a matter of community pride!
