A man whose semi drifted off a southbound lane of Interstate 75 in Alachua County Wednesday morning and crashed into brush and water died at the scene, troopers said.
The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m., just south of a rest stop near Paynes Prairie, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. Witnesses said the man's truck appeared to wobble, then drove off the road.
Motorists and rescue personnel rushed to help the man, breaking into the truck's cab, which they said was partially submerged in water.
No one else was injured in the accident. Traffic along the road was not blocked.
The man's name has not been released pending verification of his identity and notification of relatives. The truck had an Oklahoma license plate. Investigators believe the man had suffered a heart attack or some other type of medical problem.
Troopers said this is the first traffic fatality in Alachua County this year.
