Men are to love their wives

A recent letter proved that you don't have to be a conservative Christian to misquote or misrepresent the Bible. Deborah Kemmerer (Jan. 1) meant to remind us that, "Conservative Christians fought against the vote for women, quoting scripture about women needing to be subservient to men as men are to Christ."
If this is so, she should have pointed out to such errant believers that the Bible doesn't actually say this at all. Instead of the broad brush she uses, it should be pointed out that the miscue comes from Ephesians 5:22, which is part of Paul's exhortation to married couples. The first part does admonish a wife to submit herself to her own husband, but the weightier responsibility is given to the man, who is told to "love," "nourish," "cherish" and give his life for her. Is there a woman on Earth who is against this?
As for her slur against Christians as the progenitors of the KKK, I can only say that believers and nonbelievers alike look to the scriptures to excuse themselves and accuse others. It would be better to use them to find the way for themselves.
