FORT MYERS: Man bit by his pet cobra

A Lee County man was in serious condition Friday after being bitten by his pet cobra. David Wheathers, 25, was struck in the stomach by the 5-foot snake while handling it Thursday night, authorities said. A friend drove him to Lee Memorial Hospital, where Wheathers received 10 vials of antivenin. Wheathers is likely to make a full recovery.

CORAL GABLES: Jury awards $100 million in lawsuit

A circuit jury awarded $100 million to a 4-year-old girl who suffered brain damage after getting through a broken gate and nearly drowning in a swimming pool at an apartment complex. Her attorneys said they believed the personal injury verdict, returned Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, to be the highest ever in Florida. Loren Hinton was 2 when she got into the unguarded pool of the Tropisun apartment complex in Hollywood on May 15, 2001.
