DELAND - A 17-year-old high school student collapsed while in an English class and died Tuesday, school officials said.
Christopher Owens, a junior at DeLand High School, was rushed to a hospital after collapsing during the second-period class and pronounced dead at the hospital, said Nancy Wait a spokeswoman for Volusia County schools.
An immediate cause of the death wasn't known, but the county medical examiner planned to conduct an autopsy, Wait said.
Owens had been in a weightlifting class before the English class. He was trying out for the weightlifting team, Wait said.
Three counselors were sent to the school to help grieving students and teachers.
