Hats off to the Gainesville Police Party Patrol, which recently ticketed 22 underage drinkers at downtown bars. I hope the establishments were ticketed as well.
Maybe with repeat offenses, their licenses will be suspended or revoked. The bar owners need to know that they need to make their money on people of legal drinking age.
I'm also encouraged that the police have said their effort will be continued. Many know that underage drinking in downtown and in establishments near the university has been commonplace for a very long time.
If the police want to know where it is happening, just ask the students, they know the popular places to go where underage people can get alcohol.
They also know where to easily use their fake IDs to buy drinks. And I'm afraid those are far too commonplace as well.
I truly hope this is a turning point and we are going to get tough on underage drinking in this town.
We shouldn't wait until we have several alcohol-related accidents or deaths before we decide underage drinking is not an option in Gainesville.
