MERRITT ISLAND - A 24-year-old man has been charged with fatally beating to death his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.
James T. Robinson, of Merritt Island, was arrested in a Maryland suburb of Washington where he had fled after being charged in Florida with the beating death of Kevin "KJ" Fulmore Jr.
The beating occurred Saturday and the boy died Sunday, deputies said.
"He struck the child multiple times in the abdomen and says it was for discipline because he didn't like the child's behavior," said Cmdr. Mark Riley of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. "It's tragic because a child is not able to defend himself."
Robinson was expected to be extradited to Florida in the next few days, officials said.
The child's siblings, a 3-month-old and a 1-year-old, were removed from the home and placed into state custody.
