CHIEFLAND - Counselors from several Levy County schools were called to Chiefland High School Thursday morning to help students cope with the death of a junior class athlete.
Ricky Wright was found dead at his family's home shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Levy County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Chuck Bastak said the results of an autopsy were not available Thursday, but the cause of Wright's death was being investigated as a likely suicide.
Wright was a defensive lineman for the Indians' football team and was a member of the baseball and weightlifting teams. When word of his death began circulating through the city of 2,000 residents, his teammates began gathering at Hardeetown Baptist Church, where pastors and other adults began helping them grieve.
School officials said school was open on Thursday, but the class schedule was altered so students could meet in small groups and one-on-one with counselors brought in from other schools as well as Hospice volunteers and area pastors.
"We tried to let them work out their emotions," said Principal Robert Hastings. The Chiefland basketball games scheduled for Thursday night and tonight and the volleyball banquet planned for tonight were all canceled.
