FORT MYERS - A 36-car pileup that injured 11 people shut down Interstate 75 in both directions for four hours Tuesday in northern Lee County.
The accident happened at about 7:45 a.m. in heavy fog, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Malcolm Rhodes.
"It was kind of an unusual fog," Rhodes said. "It wasn't a soupy kind of fog we're accustomed to. It was like a wall, and the driving conditions went from normal conditions to zero visibility instantly."
The interstate was closed for about eight to 10 miles in both directions until reopening at noon.
The 11 injured people were taken to area hospitals, said Capt. Dave Wheaton, with Lee County Emergency Management Services. Four of them had serious injuries.
