The annual manatee survey completed earlier this month turned up the second most manatees since the survey began in 1991.
The Jan. 9 statewide survey found 2,861 manatees, including 1,166 on the Gulf Coast and 1,695 on the Atlantic Coast. Biologists for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Florida Marine Research Institute said weather conditions were optimal for getting a good look at the manatees this year.
More information about how manatees are counted is available from the institute's Web site at www.floridamarine.org, then click on "manatees."
