MLK National Volunteer Weekend Jan. 18-20

Martin Luther King Jr. National Volunteer Weekend will run Jan. 18-20 to celebrate the spirit of unity and remembrance.
The following service projects give a wide range of options for supporting this community. Call 378-2552 for information on how you can sign up.
  • Barbecue Rib Fest Saturday. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will benefit the United Gainesville Community Development Corporation. Opportunities in setting up, cleaning up, putting up flyers and posters, as well as crowd control are available.

  • No More Homeless Pets Coalition helps coordinate about half a dozen local pet shelters and animal causes.
    Opportunities are Saturday, Sunday or Monday, morning shifts (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or afternoon shifts (1-5 p.m.). Call Michelle Dunlap, 373-1733.
  • The Bread of the Mighty Food Bank receives food from local stores and sells them at a discounted price to those in need.Opportunities are available Monday, flexible hours during the day. Call Steve at 336-0839.
  • Kanapaha Botanical Gardens: Volunteers are needed to help round up the invasive air potato plant Monday any time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call Barbara Bennett at 372-4981.
