LIVE OAK - Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl after a preliminary police report stated there was evidence of foul play.
At 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Fredrick Stegall of 638 Washington Ave. alerted neighbors that the child, Serinity Nicole Miller, had stopped breathing, the report said.
Law enforcement officials were dispatched after a 911 call from a neighbor reporting an "unresponsive child" in Stegall's care. Police would not comment on the man's relationship to the girl.
Marion Faye Cason, the child's mother, was not at the residence at the time of the distress call, the report said.
Once on the scene, Suwannee County Emergency Medical Personnel attempted to resuscitate Serinity. She was pronounced dead after being transported to Shands of Live Oak Hospital.
"This death is being investigated as a homicide," the statement said. "There is evidence that strongly suggests that foul play was present." The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office are assisting with the investigation.
