  • Imagine a world without books. Most of us have taken books for granted since childhood.
But many children in our community are growing up in a home without books to read.
Over the next several weeks, North Central Florida residents will have a chance to do something about this.
The Storybook Holiday project, now in its 14th year, collects books for Alachua County's needy children from ages 4 to 7.
The Gainesville Sun is sponsoring the project by publishing articles and promotional ads, and collecting books and money to buy books.
The School Board of Alachua County and Meridian Behavioral Health Care identify the children and distribute the books.
Books will be distributed in December to underprivileged children in Alachua County.
Last year, the people of this community contributed more than 1,167 books to the project and to the children of our community. This year, the goal is to collect and distribute at least 1,500 books.
With your generous contributions, we will reach our goal by the December 12 deadline.
Developing strong reading skills at a young age opens a boundless world of discovery and curiosity that enriches a child's life like no other activity can. And book ownership encourages reading, which results in better academic performance in school.
