Gatorsports counts down the top 25 players in the SEC, leading right up to SEC Media Days.

LSU senior linebacker

Why he's No. 16: Sheppard enters the 2010 season as one of the most dominant linebackers in the SEC. As a redshirt junior, Sheppard was third in the conference with 110 tackles (50 solo) and nobody would have questioned if he wanted to turn pro. Instead, Sheppard returns for a fifth year to help lead a young but talented LSU defense.

Key numbers: Sheppard recorded 39 tackles over a three-game span — vs. Florida, Auburn and Tulane — by registering 13 tackles in each of those contests.

Fun fact: As a senior at Stone Mountain, Ga., Stephenson High, Sheppard recorded 102 tackles, 10 sacks, an interception returned 40 yards for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He also had 17 tackles in one game.
