COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 6 Florida top Texas A&M 4-1 Sunday to sweep the SEC softball series.
The Gators (36-9, 9-6 SEC) picked up a complete-game performance from senior right-hander Kelly Barnhill (24-5) in the circle. Barnhill carried a no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning and it wasn’t until then that the Aggies (25-18, 3-12 SEC) were also able to score a run.
UF scored first in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead over Texas A&M thanks to a two-out rally that was started by Hannah Sipos and Amanda Lorenz. Lorenz produced an RBI double to right center that scored Sipos to start the rally and it was capped by a two-run home run by junior Jordan Roberts.
Lorenz and Hannah Sipos turned in multi-hit performances for the Gators, while Roberts led the team with a pair of RBI.
The Gators travel to Tallahassee to take on No. 3 Florida State starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday (ESPN2).
Women’s golf: At Athens, Ga., Florida ended the regular season with a down-to-the-wire match-up against Ole Miss to finish in sixth place at the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic on Saturday.
After forcing a tie break and getting the win for the Gators in the second round Friday, freshman Jenny Kim won her match, 4&3. Junior Carlotta Ricolfi also won her final match, 4&3, after dropping both matches Friday. Sophomore Lauren Waidner was all square heading into the final hole but ended up dropping the match.
The Gators went 1-2 in match play this weekend after getting the 8-seed from one round of stroke play Thursday. The format of the Liz Murphy is similar to what the Gators, Arkansas, Georgia and Ole Miss will see next week at the SEC Championships and in NCAA Championships. South Carolina was this event.
Florida ended the spring regular season with two team titles and seven top-five finishes. It begins play at the SEC Championships on Wednesday in Birmingham, Alabama.
