Florida coach Dan Mullen’s search for a new defensive line coach led to someone he is not only very familiar with, but someone he has worked with in the past.

David Turner, Mullen’s defensive line coach at Mississippi State for five seasons during two different stints, is the Gators’ new defensive line coach, Mullen announced Sunday.

“David is a great addition to our coaching staff and the Gators football family,” Mullen said. “We spent some time together at Mississippi State and he has produced numerous first round picks in the NFL over this 30-plus years of coaching. Having spent 16 years in the SEC, he understands that this is a line of scrimmage league and our defensive line will continue to play fast, physical and aggressive under his leadership.”

Turner is a veteran coach who has worked at five different SEC schools. He left Mullen’s MSU staff after the 2015 season to become the defensive line coach at Texas A&M. He spent this past season as the defensive line coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

A coach with more than three decades of experience, Turner has mentored several NFL players, including 2017 overall No. 1 selection Myles Garrett, 2012 12th overall selection Fletcher Cox, Josh Boyd, Jovan Haye, Kyle Love, Pernell McPhee and Preston Smith.

Turner replaces Sal Sunseri, who departed earlier this month to become the linebackers coach at Alabama, where his son is a graduate assistant.

Turner spent six seasons at MSU — from 2007-09 and from 2013-15. In his most recent stint on Mullen’s MSU staff, the Bulldogs amassed more than 180 tackles for losses, including 68 sacks. In 2015, MSU set a school record with 98 tackles for losses.

  1. He leaves Mullen for Kentucky? then leaves mullen for TAMU? in sideways moves? Why did he keep trying to get away from Mullen? Clearly these werent upward moves! Why does Mullen keep going back to someone who has dumped him twice for sideways moves? No one else available? I wont expect him to stay around long! Why am I the only one pointing out the obvious?
