HOOVER, Ala. — No. 8 seed LSU stormed back to earn an 8-5 win against No. 9 seed Mississippi State in the opening round of the SEC baseball tournament.

The Tigers didn’t hold a lead until the seventh inning, but outlasted the Bulldogs in a back-and-forth contest in front of a rowdy crowd in Hoover.

This was LSU’s eighth comeback win this season when trailing by three or more runs.

Antoine Duplantis tied his season-high with three hits, scoring twice and driving in two runs.

LSU (33-24) won its sixth straight SEC tournament opener, matching the longest streak in tournament history.

LSU advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and faces top-seeded Florida(41-15) on Wednesday. The game airs at approximately 5:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

Texas A&M and Auburn also won first-day games.

Note: UF senior catcher JJ Schwarz suffered a hand injury after being hit by a foul tip last Friday at Mississippi State. He will miss the league tourney. Freshman Tommy Mace (3-0, 4.93 ERA) will start on the mound for the Gators.

  1. Sometimes, news sites have to include articles from the AP, which writes about any and all schools. Learn to get used to that. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. and by the way, the article headline does match the article content, but then again, you don’t care.

  2. I hope LSU wins because I sure don’t want to see Mississippi State again. They dominated us last weekend. I know Singer did not pitch. But they dominated Kowar and even Byrne. I don’t think the Gators were ready to play since they had already locked up a share of the SEC regular season title. They seemed not interested at all after they blew a 3-0 lead in the first game and lost 6-3. Only bright spot was Tommy Mace looked really good. I think he may have just moved ahead of Leftwich as starter #3. Hopefully Sully can get them refocused or they could lose in the regional.

  3. There must’ve been a different article for all of these comments, because I see an article about LSU beating Miss. St., which is the headline, nothing about LAY suffering anything, and nothing about the Gators 4 game losing streak, which by the way includes the final game of a series that they won, just didn’t sweep.

  4. I wonder what is the real diagnosis on JJ Schwartz. The commentators in last night’s LSU-Miss St game said he had broken his hand and would be out 2-3 weeks or more. That would mean he could only be back if they make it all the way to the CWS.
