A day after longtime Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy stepped down, Florida coach Mike White took himself out of the running to coach at his alma mater.

White said Tuesday he had “no interest” in coaching at Ole Miss, where he started at point guard for four years from 1995-99 and later worked as an assistant coach from 2004-11.

“I have no interest at all,” White said. “I love Ole Miss, my wife loves Ole Miss. It’s a great place. Great people. Oxford is an awesome town. Ole Miss has been really, really good to me. But we are so fortunate to be here at Florida. It’s one of the best jobs in the country. And I’m not interested in any other job.”

White is 65-32 in two-plus seasons as Florida coach. Last year, the 40-year-old coach guided UF to its ninth Elite Eight appearance in school history. Last spring, White signed a contract extension through 2023 that pays him an average annual salary of $2.75 million per year.

White worked under Kennedy from 2006-11 at Ole Miss and is sad to see one of his mentors stepping down.

“He’s attracted good talent,” White said. “He’s obviously been really good to me. He retained me there. I was out of a job in Oxford, and I was working for Coach (Rod) Barnes and he retained me and he gave me an opportunity. I learned a lot from him. He had a great run and I’m sure he will coach again and be a success somewhere else as well.”

  1. On another article (“Defense lifts…..”), I was just trying to be funny posting about Kennedy leaving and White going to Mississippi. Of course, White’s not going there, Ole Miss KNOWS he’s not SEC-caliber! He probably came out with this statement only to make himself feel better. “Look at me, other schools are interested in me!” Whatever, the Gators will only win two of the remaining six — with no NCAA invite! Going to the NIT, I would think that Stricklin would have to be thinking “Wtf?!”

  2. We all hate bf. Mike White was a great hire. We are proud that he is a Gator now! Even Kentucky and North Carolina and Duke have challenging years. Gators have 3 big men hurt this year, and because of that we don’t have enough depth and we have looked sluggish in the second part of each half. We can’t press this year because of lack of depth. It’s been a weird year, and this team is still on the cusp of making the tourney. Go Gators!
