Prediction time again

Since there is no mystery about who will win Saturday’s game in The Swamp, I thought I would skip giving a score and offer up some other predictions about the game instead.

Here we go:

* Starting cornerback Janoris Jenkins will not play in the game. He’ll be standing on the sideline along with senior linebacker Dustin Doe. UF coach Urban Meyer announced earlier in the week that Doe was suspended from the game due to his legal issues over the summer. Meyer, however, would not say whether Jenkins is suspended for his arrest this summer. Prediction: He is, for one game.

* Florida’s three tailbacks — Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey and Emmanuel Moody — will all rush for more than 100 yards. Each will have a run of 25 yards or longer. I see Demps breaking a big one, 70 yards or longer. These guys had a great camp and they’ll have a chance to show their stuff Saturday.

* John Brantley will play more than Tim Tebow. I have a feeling Tebow will head to the sideline midway through the second quarter and then Brantley will play the rest of the way (or close to it). With UF trying to get its young wide receivers some experience, Brantley should be airing it out a good bit. I see him throwing for 250 yards or more and tossing four touchdown passes. That would be a pretty good day for the 2010 starter.

* There will not be much of a drop-off when the second-team defense takes over (probably sometime during the second quarter). The competition for playing time has been so intense and the Gators have so much talent that the backups will look pretty much like the starters when they’re in there. In past years, one-sided games have gotten sloppy in the second half because the UF reserves did not play well, especially on defense. That won’t happen in this one.

* Jaye Howard will start ahead of Terron Sanders at defensive tackle. True sophomore Matt Patchan will start at left offensive tackle and Carl Johnson will stay at left guard.

* The Gators will return a kickoff for a touchdown (it will be the first of Brandon James’ career, that counted) and Meyer’s punt-block team will block a punt.

* Joe Haden will not line up at quarterback in the wildcat formation. This is more of a guess, I guess.

* The defense will pitch a shutout.

  1. I’m pleading ignorance here, but is Charleston Southern really *that* bad for Brandon James to return a kickoff and to get three 100-yard-rushers? Those are lofty predictions. I hope you’re right!

  2. hello from a st augustine bretheren. I’m hoping for a B.J. “homeboy” kickoff return as well, but he’ll only have one shot at it this game if we pitch a shutout. It’s coming though, hope it’s another retun against the Vols!!

  3. Hello, Robbie. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your coverage of the Gators football team. I usually go to all the football games. I have been going to Gator football games since 1977 with my parents. My dad got booted out of the parking for handicap people that wasto be in front of the stadium because of the changes for the Bull Gators and their parking. My dad has contacted Jeremy Foley’s office about it and his office said we have not been going to games long enough and not been booster members long enough. I want to say that we have supported the Gators through the good and bad days. It takes a lot of the fun away when you can’t tailgate all day. I hope someday they clean up the problems for the handicap parking. It not as much fun when you have to take a city bus to the game and get there 3 hours before kickoff!!

    Sincerely,

    Mark Crawford

  4. The Gator fan soldiers in Iraq cannot wait. This has been a long year waiting for the football season to finally arrive and also to be almost returning stateside for time with the family and many Gator games. Thanks to the team for making my year when my wife and son attended Fan Day. It didn’t appear they would get to meet Tim, but after chatting with someone associated with the team in another line, they were allowed to take pictures and they were able to meet him. A dream come true for me to have my son meet such an outstanding role model, although my wife hugged up pretty close to him. Go Gators!
