Georgia candidates

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution covered the firing of Georgia coach Dennis Felton at length Friday, including a list of potential candidates to replace Felton.

As expected, current Virginia Commonwealth coach and former Florida assistant Anthony Grant was the first candidate mentioned. There were some reports that Grant was a shoo-in to replace Felton at the end of last season before Georgia miraculously turned things around and won the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

But the AJC threw out another surprise name as a potential replacement, former Florida and current UNLV coach Lon Kruger. Kruger has some Georgia ties, having briefly coached the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. But would it be a good fit? Kruger has always been known as more of a floor coach than a recruiter. He led the Gators to their first Final Four appearance in school history in 1994, but failed to land Daytona Beach’s Vince Carter a year later, which led to his decision in 1996 to leave UF for Illinois. Felton had a tough time getting quality players to come to Georgia, so the Dawgs might be more apt to hire someone who can bring talent to Stegeman Coliseum.
